Do Balrogs have wings?

Hey I was wondering if you think balrogs have wings or if they don't. The argument between balrogs having and not having wings is a serious dispute. In the movie peter jackson clearly depicted the balrog in moria with physical wings. I would really like to think that balrogs have wings and that they can fly, but in truth i think they are just wings made of shadow. for exsample when Gandalf smote the bridge of Khazad-dum why did the balrog not save him self and fly up. Also at the fall of Gondolin when Ecthelion of the Fountain confronted Gothmog Lord of Balrogs, and rammed his pointed helmet into Gothmogs chest and they both fell off a very high ledge into a river again why did he not save himself by flying up. Anywase tell me why you think balrogs have or don't have wings and tell me why you think that is?

I think that they do indeed have wings, J.R.R. Tolkien even uses the word "wings", but I think they are sort of like flightless birds and can't really fly through the air.

ya that is what i think. Accept J.R.R. Tolkien in the fellowship of the ring said the two fast shadow streched out like two fast wings. But i really like to think of them has having physical wings! Wings make them just that much cooler.

I do not see why there is any argument at all. JRR Tolkien obviously meant that it looked like wings or else he would have said otherwise.

yes he would have. If you read his books you know that if he says something he means it.

And plus people like us just really want balrogs to have wings and be able to fly. It just makes them that much cooler!

Tolkien doesn't waste time saying, "As Pippin's blade sank into the Orc's flesh, blood came out in waterfalls of blood. The orc fell down and wriggled around, causing the dirt around him to rise up in plumes of red dust."
This is what he would say. "Pippin killed the orc next to him as Borimir..."
Likewise, he doesn't waste time using metaphors. If he says vast wings, then he means vast wings. And if he says LIKE vast wings, then he means LIKE vast wings.

Well the movie is not what we are talking about. They gave him wings in the movie so, that is oficial. The book is not, which is the real truth.

No no you fool. befor it said that it said it had wings like shadow or somthing like that. And then it said its wings were spred wall to wall, refering to the wings like shadow. Try not to be fooled by writers writing.

I do but the point is that they don't it states in the book that they are wings of shadow nothing more. That is the Sad honest truth. He may not be able to fly but he still looks cool with wings of shadow.

P.S. Sorry for calling you a fool. It is the correct term to use for what you did though, still I am sorry.
