I know that Eru and the Valar forbid Olorin to confront Sauron directly but if these two Maiar were to fight each other, who would win. Gandalf the Grey or Sauron in the very begining of the Second Age before the forgign of the One-ring.

I think that Sauron would win because it was said that he was one of the greatest Maiar and why would the Valar prohibit Gandalf to fight him if he did not have the strength to beat him. They would have let him confront him if he had the power to defeat him. So I think Sauron would beat Gandalf the Grey.
