The race of Men is the second race of beings created by the supreme God, Ilúvatar. Because they awoke at the start of the First Age, at the first rising of the Sun, while the elves awoke three Ages before them, they are called the Afterborn (Quenya Atani, Sindarin: Edain) by the Elves.
Men bear the so-called Gift of Men, mortality. Elves are immortal, in the sense that even if their bodies are slain, their spirits remain bound to the world, going to theHalls of Mandos to wait until they are released or the world ends. Elves are tied to the world for as long as it lasts.
That is how the men started.

I would rather go to the Halls of Mandos. Because I don't exactly know where you go when you die as a man. I know you pass beyond the world of Arda. But there is just less mystery and more sureness that you are going somewhere good.

That is funny Illuvatar. But I would want to be an Elve now that I think about it. Because I would be a good Elve and so Mondos would judge me good and worthy and would let me see my Kin in Valinor again!

True, but having faith in Illuvatar would prove worthy. Anyways I would love to stay on the earth for as long as I am alive as an Elf. To see the earth grow it times of mirth. But also to see it wither in times of sorrow.
I do not know exactly where to go when you die as a man. I know you over the Arda world. However, not only the mystery and more practical, you are going somewhere good.
