Well they are Maiar spirits that took the form of the sun. Like Ungoliant or Shelob. But I like to think of Balrogs being able to talk like dragons. Because they are maybe even smarter then dragons and that means that they could probably talk. And Gothmog lord of balrogs was Morgoths general making him liable to give orders so I think he could talk and that probably means that all balrogs can talk.

if they could talk and I was the balrog in the movie when gandalf says"you can not pass" I would say " to bad old man what are you going to do to stop me"

Lol ya I would say, "Old Grey beard how can you fight with the will of some one who welds the Flame of Udun!" But then after that I would sadly fall and be made a fool out of. By the way in the movie the balrog is dumb enough to step onto the bridge that Gandalf did something to. In the book it just says that Gandalf smote the bridge meaning he could have just blown up the hole thing right away. Because an intelligent creature like the Balrog could never fall for some trick like that.

That is probably what he was thinking. Except he probably knew that he was a Maiar when he smote the bridge.

That, would be epic. Aswel as when Durin's Bane falls from the Bridge of Khazad-dum after Gandalf smites it he would say. "Well played Olorin". Or somthing along that line. However I am sure they were well aware of each others race nonetheless.
