In the Silmarilion Gothmog lord of balrogs is head buted by en elve into a river. It is said that his mane of fire was put out thus killing him because that is what kept him alive. But in the book the Fellowship of the Ring when Gandalf smote the bridge of Khazad-dum he fell and the Balrog used his fiery whip of many thongs to wrap around the wizards knees and drug him down with him! They fell through fire and water together fighting for many days. When Gandalf and the Balrog got out of the water that they had fell into Gandalf was a bit shoke but the Balrog of Morgoth was diferent. His fire was put out, to the last flame. And according to Gandalf the White he looked like a creature of slime, made of all shadow. But yet he was alive unlike Gothmog his master. The balrog fled to the endless stair case and whent up for many thousand stairs. When they reached Durin's Tower The fire in the demon grew again and became whole in him again. I guess he just needed to dry off lol. Any wase I want to know why you think he survied and his much greater mast Gothmog died. So tell me your theories, and be as discriptive as posible.
That could be true since that elve drowned and died. I thought why can he not swim and maybe that is why he was busy holding Gothmog down. However in the Silmarilion it clearly says the river put out his mane of fire which kept him alive so that means once it is out he is out. So That probably would not be the case.
It's like attila the hun he was tearifing to the romans and brought death and deastuction were ever his army went and yet ironicly some acounts of his death say he died of a nosebleed!

Ah, well still, just because he has rested dose not mean he can not die the same way as his master. Who knows maybe this is a mistake by J.R.R. Tolkien??? We will have to dig deeper. Even deeper then the gredy Dwarves dug into Moria. Haha funny!
Of corse. He is one of my favorite characters. It is a shame how he had to go out. But he had made a name for himself and would latter retun in the Dagor Dagorath.
Ya, and he was not his fire was put out for days and then was re caught on fire again. I think that Durin's Bane got out of the water in time so that he was almost dead and that is why he ran away from Olorin. Gothmog was sweped away by a river and could not escape and he died. And plus the water Durins Bane fell into was calm, like a lake. That is it I have figured it out. Eurika eurika eurika eurika eurika eurika eurika eurika!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
